The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
