Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like typical physical horror, but within Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when the couple transition from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that come with most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience today.
